KUALA LUMPUR, 17 Sept-The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) celebrated its 82nd anniversary on 16 Sept 15 and held its parade today to make way for the Malaysia Day celebration. The MAF traces its history from the official establisment of the Malaysian Army. The historic formation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963, saw the government redesignating all the 3 services under the then Federal Armed Forces into the MAF which is now regulated under the Armed Forces Act (1972).
It was also decided that the Armed Forces Day would be celebrated on the same date every year to commemorate the establishment of the new Federation of Malaysia. However, taking into account the early inception of the formal establishment of a military force in 1933, which was in fact, the nucleus for the nation's armed forces, that year was designated as the year the MAF was born.
50 officers and 610 men were involved in todays 82nd MAF Day parade. A total of 15 colours were trooped, consisting of 7 from the Malaysian Army, 4 each from the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) and Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).
YBhg General Tan Sri Dato’ Sri (Dr.) Haji Zulkifeli bin Mohd Zin, the Malaysian CDF took the salute and later was accompanied by all 3 Service Chiefs during the line inspection.
10 MAF personnel received the Perkhidmatan Setia Medal and 10 civillian staffs were receipient for the CDF Merit Certificate. The Malaysian CDF Readiness Award went to 3 Div HQ (Malaysian Army), 502 Sqn KD Rajawali (RMN) and Gong Kedak Air Base (RMAF).
This year's 82nd MAF Parade was led by Commander Md Zain bin Zakaria RMN. MAF will continue to retain its tagline - A FORMIDABLE MAF, SOVEREIGNTY SAFEGUARDED, until year 2018.
