12 Feb 16 – Kuala Lumpur. The nation paid their last respect to one of its heroes, Capt Dato' Hamid Awang (Retired), 68, who passed away at the Malaysian Armed Forces Tuanku Mizan Hospital due to kidney failure. The late Capt. Dato' Hamid Awang was hospitalised since 8 Feb 16.
The late Capt. Hamid Awang (retired) halis from Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu was confered the pingat Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa (SP), the highest gallantry award at the age of 26, in recognition of his bravery and gallantry displayed in a clash with the communist terrorists in Gunung Pueh, Sarawak in 1973. He led a small group of soldiers from the 2nd Royal Malay Regiment to track down the communist terrorists after receiving information. His group then stumbled on the enemy site and launched the attack.
3 communist terrorists were killed during the clash and one of the late Capt. Dato' Hamid Awang (Retired) man was killed in Action. They managed to confiscate several automatic rifles, ammunition, and other military equipment.
